HBCU SINGS SERIES
Project Type
Cabaret Style Concert Series
Date
February 2024, April 2024
Role
Producer
The HBCU Sing Series is a cabaret-styled concert series featuring exclusively HBCU students and alum produced in partnership with Black Girls Do Theater and 54 Below. This mission driven passion project was founded by Cecily D. Davis to provide HBCU students/alum access to the New York Theatre scene and to infiltrate traditionally white performance spaces with HBCU pride, joy and community. The inaugural concert, HBCUs in Love, featured love songs from Musical Theatre, Pop and RnB. The following concert, HBCU Sings: Diva Edition, produced in collaboration with D.I.V.A Inc., was a joyous - and fabulous- tribute to the iconic divas of RnB, Pop, Soul and, of course, Musicals.
The historic concert series, being the first concert at 54 Below featuring exclusively HBCU artists, was Co-produced by Howard University Alumna and Royal Court. I served as a producer alongside Cecily Dionne Davis (Fiona in Shrek National Tour, Black Girls Do Theater), Kaihla Powell (Company/General Management Fellow with Black Theatre Coalition, D.I.V.A. Inc.), Da’Quan Cooney and Skylar Wilson (Howard University’s former Mister and Miss Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts).
Though students of the illustrious Howard University helmed the process, both concerts featured artists from various HBCUs including; Bowie State University, Claflin University, Edward Waters College, Jackson State University, North Carolina A&T, and Spelman College.
