PERCEPTION

Can I talk my sh*t
I got some poems to spit
Can we sit together in this moment in time
I tell you my stories through a couple of rhymes
You can "ooooooooh" and "ahhhhhhhhhh" and *snap*
that's fine
at these crafted lines
that form these verses of mine...

To more deeply understand me as an artists is to meet me as a poet. Before acting, directing and producing, I found myself in rhythm and verse. Poetry still remains the heart beat of all of my work. It is my first love and the reason I found a passion in sharing stories with my community.

I grew up in Augusta, Georgia, where there was a vibrant art scene led by poets who captivated me and my friends with their intricate rhythms, indulgent verses and clever rhymes. These storytellers not only enthralled audiences but marked the mic with stage names. I decided that if I were to be a poet, I too should find my stamp on the stage. I declared myself Perception, a name that represents my intuitive nature, introspective writing and aim to cultivate connection by using poetry to understand the way I and my community see the world.
