BLACK ARTS MOVEMENT MINI DOC
Project type
Mini Documentary
Role
Writer, Director, and Editor
In my sophomore year acting class at Howard University, my peers and I were tasked with an oral presentation on any topic relating to 20th century drama. I decided to focus mine on the Black Arts Movement, the cultural explosion of Black art that emerged in the 60s and 70s. This movement was led by politically motivated poets, artists, dramatists, musicians, and writers who used their creativity to intertwine arts and activism.
Inspired by the cultural movement and bubbling with creative energy stifled by a pandemic that forced me to learn my craft from Zoom, I decided to try my hand in making a mini documentary. My curiosity and self-taught filmmaking skills resulted in this min doc turned passion project. I submitted my film, received and A+ and soon forgot about it...until a few months later I found the video reached 2 Thousand views and a collected encouraging comments from viewers. Now, the documentary is up to over 7 Thousand views, which in a viral sensation driven world which seems like a big deal at all. However, the project also reached educators who have contacted me to use my video to help teach others about this historic movement. And that...to me... is a very big deal indeed.
